Dispatches: Undercover Mosques

// January 18th, 2007 // Blog

Some have described this programme as anti-Islam propaganda, others, as an exposé of the true face of Britain's mosques. You can judge for yourself.

In my previous post, i asked, “wouldn't it be great if Muslims were allowed to respond to this allegation, and have it broadcast to an equally wide audience?”. Well, my blog might not receive the ratings that Dispatches pulls in, but that's not going to stop me; blog-power, and all that.

I have compiled a summary of the major points featured in the programme. My plan is to dedicate an entry for each one, for the purposes of discussion, and in some cases, in order to refute the accusation that bigotry and extremism are endemic to the British Muslim community, and that we are essentially a bunch of fifth columnists.

If anyone thinks i have missed out anything important, please mention it in the comments section.

The list is not in any order of importance:

* The use and meaning of the words “kuffaar/ kaafir” and “kufr“.
* The relationship between Jews, Christians and Muslims.
* Shariah vs. “Man-made” laws.
* Islam & Democracy.
* The use of compulsive means to ensure Muslims practise Islam & apostasy from Islam.
* Marriage in Islam, including a discussion of the Prophet's marriage to Ayesha at a young age (not pre-puberty, as the programme states).
* Islam's view of homosexuality.
* Jihad vs terrorism.
* Women in Islam.
* Muslims living in non-Muslim lands: rights and responsibilities.
* The role of scholars and preachers in Islam.
* Islam's view of sectarianism.

That's quite a long list. I'm not even going to pretend i can get through all of these topics by myself. For one, i am not qualified to answer any of them in great detail. However, i have read a few well-researched articles that relate to some of these points; i shall search them down and paste them here.

In the mean time, if anyone has any useful information that may help to tackle the claims made by the programme, including relevant entries from your own blog, i would be most grateful if you could send me an e-mail.

I cannot do this alone, and would greatly appreciate any help.

May Allāh reward you.

    I’ll give you a rough summary of the issues raised in that doc- based on your bullet points :D

    The term kufr, kuffar etc are not meant to be derogatory – they simply describe the state of certain people – the unbelievers. But it HAS been used to belittle and to scorn those it refers to.

    The r’ship between Jews,Xians and Muslims is commonly said to be bound together and similar due to their Abrahamic roots. Insh’Allah i’ll try to say more once I have the time!

    Shariah vs man made laws – Shariah laws are meant to be based on Quran & sunnah, which are a complete and perfect base on which to implement law in society- whereas man made laws are subject to faults, shortcomings and fall short of the divine wisdom that Shariah Law holds. (thats just a snippet of this debate!)

    Democracy – again, the preference for the Caliphate, whereby he who is of sound character, proven to all etc is made “leader” whereby democratic elections are won by who has the glittiest campaign :p (there is more to this – but im not sure what exactly)

    Compulsion – not sure about that. Will look into it for you.

    Marriage in Islam – the infamous one is Prophet(saw) marriage to Aisha; the focus on her age – and what is often forgotten about is the social norms of that era – large age gaps werent anything “bizarre”. Marrying a woman older than yourself was talk of the town!

    homosexuality – as with the other religions, like Xianity/Judaism, its not permissible – but in Islam the ACT of homosexuality is punishable – to have inclinations of it on its own is NOT; but one is told to work towards ridding this feeling as it is not natural (which it isnt)

    Jihad/terrorism – dont know enough on that to comment

    Women in Islam – too big an issue! but it boils down to cultural mishmashing of religious rulings pertaining to women.

    And the other 3…i dont know much on so will best not comment.

    It’ll be interesting to see what everyone says

    Jews, Xians and Muslims? What about atheists? Don’t we rate a mention? Don’t we count?

    Boo Hoo! This is discrimination you know, iMuslim!

    I like sumera’s approach. Because a Muslim does not speak what he/she knows not.

    I too will try to contribute what I know when I have the time.

    I’m still working on it, but meanwhile here’s an awesome response from Sheikh Yasir Qadhi to the people who made the video:

  7. kuffaar says:

    What we Kuffaars find so difficult to understand about Islam is how Muslims carefully and deliberately cultivate minds seething with hatred towards non-Muslims, and teach this venom to their children from infancy onwards.

    Muslims seem to be commanded by the Koran to focus their thoughts on hatred, which is the direct opposite of real religions such as Christianity and Buddhism, which encourage the mental qualities of love, compassion and the desire for peace.

    The development and deliberate cultivation of hatred is such a central feature of Islam that there is nothing that we Kuffaars can do, or not do, that would make them hate us any less or any more. Hatred of the Kuffaar is so intrinsic to Islam that external events are irrelevant. – “Hatred of non-Moslems is the pivot of Islamic existence.” (http://www.indiastar.com/wallia15.htm)

    Muslims define their own identity solely in opposition to the Kuffaar. Islamic accomplishments are so negligible that they have no positive cultural features with which they can identify themselves. Hence the unceasing and implacable aggression toward civilized peoples.

    Muslims are bound together chiefly by a shared and carefully nurtured animosity towards all non-Muslims. That is the defining feature of their cult. If we do not destroy Islam (hopefully non-violently) it will assuredly destroy us with extreme violence.

    Some quotes illustrating the importance of hatred as the prime motivator for Muslims:

    ‘….emulating the non-Muslims in their outward characteristics leads to emulating them in their conducts and ugly deeds. It also makes one love them. Therefore differ from idolaters and disbelievers in their behaviour and opinions and beware of taking them as friends. You should hate them, disown them and their religion and be proud of your religion. Strive for their guidance and call them to Islaam.’
    From http://www.alminbar.com/khutbaheng/1819.htm

    ‘Allah (SWT) tells you to love, and hate those whom He tells you to hate…..Therefore you must love the Muslims, believers and mujaahideen, and hate the kuffaar, Shaytaan and all other disbelievers; otherwise you will be violating one of the conditions of tawheed and hence become mushrik.‘

    From http://islambest-muqatil.blogspot.com/2006/12/conditions-of-tawheed.html

    ‘If the Muslim has to be with the non-Muslims physically, he should not be with them in his heart, and he must avoid mixing with them unnecessarily.
    Even if they give you some of your rights by treating you nicely, they do not give Allah His rights and they do not give the Qur’an its rights and they do not give our Prophet his rights. The rights of Allah and His Book and His Prophet are more important than our personal rights. Remember this, for this is one of the things that will help you to hate them and regard them as enemies until they believe in Allah alone.’

  8. DA says:

    Kuffar: Daniel Pipes is a disingenuous liar, and a racist. Getting an accurate read on Muslims from him is like trying to get a read on Jews by listening to David Duke.
    You found a few Muslims expressing dislike of non-Muslims, but with all due respect, so what? I can find HUNDREDS of Jewish and Christian sites attacking Muslims if I just sit down and look for them a little. Believe it or not, I used to have a view of Muslims roughly the same as yours; and yet now I am a Muslim. So I have no hatred or venom towards you, but I would urge you to explore other sources of information.

    Imuslim, as to the points of address;

    *I almost never use the word kufr and I advise others to be somewhat guarded about it. If you refer to someone as a kufr and you are WRONG….Man, that’s no good. I’ve called exactly one individual a kufr, a so-called Muslim who declared takfir on me first. I don’t use it in a general sense often either; I remain unconvinced that the term should be applied to the ahul-l-kitab, since it literally denotes someone “ungrateful” to God.

    That being said, I know many people who are obvious and unabashed kafirun. It doesn’t mean I hate them, it simply says where we stand in regards to each other.

    *Jews and Christians are Ahul-l-kitab. If rejecting Muhammad (saws) as a prophet means a people are wicked, it would stand to reason that the Jews of his time would have been wicked for rejecting Issa (saws). I have never seen any evidence that this is the case. This is also remembering that there are now and were at the prophet’s (saws) time Jews who did not become Muslims but respected and allied with Muhammad, including a Rabbi who died as Shahid in battle alongside the Muslims. The Jews believed (and some still do) that Islam was valid, but for the arabs; they had their Torah. Whether one personally agrees with this view (I do not), I do nto think painting anything in broad stripes is too useful. All that aside, we are not Jews or Christians, we are Muslims, and there are certain things we will do differently and certain things they do that we cannot. I love Jews but I’m not going to drink wine with them, I love Christians but I won’t join their over-reverence of Jesus. People think “respect” has to mean a lack of personal standards these days, and I disagree vehemently.

    *Shariah vs Man Made Laws; I cannot think of a single country on earth that practices true Shariah law. The laws of such nations as Saudi Arabia and Afganistan were alomost parodies of the code we were given to live by. That being said, I absolutely believe in the Shariah for use in the Muslim community, but only after some serious reforms within the ummah and the re-instatement of true Islamic education. None of this “women can’t drive, men can molest babies” nonsense.

    *Islam and Democracy-I’ll leave that one for now, I’d need more time to go into that in any depth.

    *I believe in leaving someone strictly to their conscience and the mercy of allah in such matters. Their can be no compulsion in religion; you cannot force faith.

    *Anyone who thinks what Islam says about marriage is crazy isn’t paying attention to American culture. Tell me that Britanny Spears’ weddings, or the rampant adultery (so commonplace it’s become a form of pop-culture entertainment), or elementary school kids having fuck-buddies aren’t insane. As for Aisha (as) Most reliable sources state that she was in her teens when the marriage was consumated, which makes perfect sense in the context of her time and place, when a teenager was an adult (teen girls are NOT adults today, however, and as a rule I’m against age-dystonic marriages within the ummah).

    *Homosexuality is, by definition, unnatural and disordered. Muslims are given a simple life pattern based on nature and an ability to keep civilization intact, so we shun such behavior. Simple really.

    *Muslims are the only group of people in the world who are currently being told that they cannot defend themselves and must take any western overture lying down like a punk. Anything else is terrorism. Is there genuine terrorism? Sure, and I am absolutely against it. Let anyone who would take innocent life for a political abstraction suffer for it. However, let that include everyone, from Bin Laden to Bush.

    I’ll address the rest later, gotta finish some work :-)

  9. DA says:

    “Islamic accomplishments are so negligible that they have no positive cultural features with which they can identify themselves. Hence the unceasing and implacable aggression toward civilized peoples.”

    This shows a total lack of knowledge of history. Seriously. Muslims were makings strides in Mathmatics, architecture, medicine, astronomy, social theory, biology, and many other disciplines while in Europe they were executing people for trying to know how the human body worked and deliberately keeping their own population in a condition that even the ancient celts woudl have considered uncivilized. Please, if yopu’re going to quote history, know something about it first.

  10. Dr. Abdullah Azzaam says:

    Where the Kuffar are not gathering to fight the Muslims. The fighting becomes Fard Kifaya with the minimum requirement of appointing believers to guard borders, and the sending of an army at least once a year to terrorize the enemies of Allah. It is a duty of upon the Imam to assemble and send out an army unit into the land of war once or twice every year. Moreover, it is the responsibility of the Muslim population to assist him, and if he does not send an army he is in sin.

    And the Ulama have mentioned that this type of jihaad is for maintaining the payment of Jizya. The scholars of the principles of religion have also said: “Jihaad is Da’wah with a force, and is obligatory to perform with all available capabilities, until there remains only Muslims or people who submit to Islam.”

    This is what I wrote to http://austrolabe.com/.

    There seemes to be a problem to post on wordpress

    Just a note.

    I wonder why they (“Call to Islam” third article) jump to attack “other” Muslims. Calling them Oncle Toms. Is there a competition between mosques on who gets the biggest subsidy from the government?

    And I think it would help if the Imams on programme come out and admit their faults. Where in Islam says that we should call the Jews “Pigs” or any groups? Jews or not, they are all Allah’s creations, and for that we should respect them.

    It is very clear to see there is anger some of Imams on the programme, whether it is pointed to the society or something else. They should not bring it on mosque.
