The Blue Ninjabi

// June 2nd, 2008 // 11 Comments » // Blog

I am quite tired… pooped in fact. And not just from all the typing I've been doing in the last couple of hours in relation to the kaffiyeh event (which got posted on the front of btw! Māshā’Allāh!).

The main cause of my sore muscles was the most intense hour of physical activity that I have so far experienced in my short life, that took place between 10.30-11.30am this Sunday morning. Otherwise known as: my blue belt grading. Guys, I now have a belt in kickboxing – woooohoooo! Alhamdulillah!

It might not sound like much, but this is a real achievement for someone like me. This is my first significant sporting achievement since I came third in the 200m sprint, in my last year of primary school. As pathetic as that sounds, I DO NOT KID! I feel like calling up my old P.E. teacher and telling her the good news:

“Remember the tubby geek who couldn't throw, catch, jump, run or even stretch properly to save her life? Well, in your face Mrs Taylor – I'm a martial artist now. Ner!”.

Darn You, Procrastination!

// February 11th, 2008 // 8 Comments » // Blog

Why does it have to hit when you have a tonne of work to do? I'm feeling terribly “not bothered”, which is a 180 on how super-keen I have been acting all week. Maybe I just burned myself out… y'know, with all that key depression, and mouse clicking. Wow, hard work.

Actually, I did attend kickboxing class twice this week… allow me a Valley Girl moment to tell you how, like, totally awesome it is, yah! But I am sooooooo sore today. I've been hobbling around the house like an old lady; those stairs are killing me! Why did I have to live on the top floor? Owwweeeee…

Now You Can Officially “Get Back!”

// May 26th, 2007 // 12 Comments » // Blog

Today was my last self-defense class, sniffle. Our usual instructor, Dee, couldn't make it, as she was having fifteen injections in her foot, to treat some kind of injury she sustained. Ouch! Get better soon, Dee! But she left a little something for us with Emma, our stand-in kick-boxing coach (today we did a taster class in kick-boxing, instead, and it was fantastique! Though I will be feeling it tomorrow, in strange places, i'm sure):

Just thought i'd follow on from my Kick Ass entry (in more than just name – yeah, lamo joke), with the URL to the Ninjabi website.

Last week i learnt three more blocking moves, as well as a kick that would have guys tearing at the eyes – you know what i'm sayin'? Unfortunately, later in the evening, when i tried to show my mum this particular move, i quickly realized that my jilbab would serve as a severe impediment to such an attack! Your leg can only go so high with that thing on. Makes me wonder what other moves are anti-jilbab (or anti-long skirt). I think i'll have to bring that up with the instructor, next time, inshā’Allāh.

Oh, i have also discovered my favourite strike! I can't remember what it's called, but it involves the elbow. It's quite powerful, and i really want to try it out on someone! Next time i spot a guy trying to gate-crash the sisters-only hall of a segregated wedding, “looking for his Mrs”, he'll be wishing he'd used his damned mobile phone instead, after i'm through with him!

Kick Ass

Last Saturday, i attended a class which i've been wanting to take for so long.

No – not Arabic, not Fiqh, not Tajweed: Self-defense.
