Kaffiyeh Day: What It’s Really All About

// June 4th, 2008 // 2 Comments » // Blog

Something I posted on MuslimMatters.org, that explains the event from a personal perspective. Btw, apologies if you're sick of me talking about this event… it'll all be over soon. ;)

I feel somewhat overwhelmed… I didn't realise this Kaffiyeh Day thing was going to be noticed by this many people! All good and success comes from God. But even with all the positive comments, I still wonder whether I did the right thing? Is this just a huge waste of time? Are things really going to change after Friday? Will the press even give two hoots about a bunch of Facebookers wearing kaffiyeh?

Jerusalem: Don’t Be A Stranger

// May 16th, 2008 // No Comments » // Blog

It's been a long while since I wrote anything on MuslimMatters.org… Blog About Palestine Day (and a recent experience with my iPod Touch) gave me something to write about:

The other night I was sat on my sofa not doing very much. Being the easily bored woman-child that I am, I ended up messing around with the Google Maps feature of my latest toy, which allowed me to view aerial shots of almost anywhere in the world, 007-stylee. All of a sudden, I felt the urge to perform a virtual Umrah, and a few seconds after typing in “Mecca”, I was magically transported to… California.

Say what?

Muslims in Australia: Interview with Amir Colan

// January 24th, 2008 // No Comments » // Blog

Another entry for MuslimMatters, this time a podcast interview with the director of the film documentary, “Muslims in Australia”:

It seems that I am gradually becoming MuslimMatters' unofficial media correspondent, as I now blog about yet another documentary concerning a Muslim minority community. But perhaps the readers would be pleased to note that this film is not in fact more sensationalist propanganda designed to divide society, but rather the exact opposite. Continue reading…

Organ Donation: Something to think about?

// January 20th, 2008 // No Comments » // Blog

My latest entry for MuslimMatters, discussing the issue of organ donation:

Discovering this “common ground” between five very different religions, made me realise that, as a Muslim, I've never really thought much about the idea of becoming an organ donor before. I had some inkling that it was permissible in Islam, but had not yet embarked upon a serious quest to decide whether or not I should carry a donor card. In light of this recent debate, and the fact that I don't know how long I have left on this Earth, I think it is about time that I did.

Review of Part III of Make Me A Muslim

// December 21st, 2007 // No Comments » // Blog

I have posted my final review! No idea why it took so long… i think i found it difficult to actually come to a solid conclusion on the show. Anyway, please head over and check it out – especially the last paragraph concerning a debate that is taking place online about how TV should deal with Muslim issues:

Review of Episode 3: With trembling fingers and bated breath, I clumsily fumbled with the remote control, in my haste to find the channel that would deliver the nail-biting conclusion of the reality TV saga that has been, Make Me A Muslim.

Okay, so I wasn't that desperate to catch the last episode, but like a great number of other British Muslims, I was certainly more than a little curious to see how our seven intrepid explorers fared, after three “gruelling” weeks of intense Islam-awareness training. And the verdict is…

Review of Part II of Make Me A Muslim

// December 18th, 2007 // No Comments » // Blog

Sorry if i confused anyone with the link i posted yesterday – i messed up on the MM blog a bit. I have created a new entry that contains reviews for both part one and two of Make Me A Muslim:

Review of Episode 2: After my negative perception of yesterday's episode, I wasn't actually planning to review the series “Make Me A Muslim”, any further, as I frankly expected more of the same. And to be perfectly honest… I was completely wrong to do so.

Maybe it's my mood, maybe I've had more time to reflect, but in my opinion, today's episode was a vast improvement in many respects. I do believe the main reason for this was that more emphasis was placed on the spiritual nature of Islam, rather than just the rules and regulations; in fact, even Muslims forget that spirituality is at the heart of this great religion (I'll be the first to put my hand up to being guilty of this). Thus I expect that many more viewers were able to relate to the events that took place during this installment, inshā’Allāh.

Review of “Make Me A Muslim”

// December 17th, 2007 // No Comments » // Blog

This latest MuslimMatters entry follows on from the introduction I posted a few days ago:

For those who can't be bothered to read the following review of the first episode of Make Me A Muslim (click here for my introduction to the programme), i'll summarise it for you in two words: absolute rubbish!

Now, you see what I did there? I took an entire hour of programming, stripped away every nuance and detail, and decided to only concentrate on the most negative aspect, all for the purpose of causing a reaction in the reading audience. That, my friends, is the true summary of this show.

Can I Make You A Muslim?

// December 14th, 2007 // No Comments » // Blog

My latest offering for MuslimMatters.org:

Having spent an hour this evening repeatedly smacking my hand against my forehead whilst watching a documentary on some random American Doomsday cult, I found the same hand twitching slightly when, straight afterwards, I witnessed an advert for an upcoming Channel 4 production called: Make Me A Muslim. What is it with Channel 4 and quirky shows about religion? They obviously know what draws the punters in. Continue Reading..

Muslims on TV

// November 16th, 2007 // No Comments » // Blog

Please head over to Muslim Matters to check out my latest contribution: Muslims on TV.

News, documentaries, drama and even comedy; it seems that TV producers cannot get enough of us these days. Programmes like “The Muslim Jesus“, and – dare i say it – “Little Mosque on the Prairie” have been a breath of fresh air in comparison to the mostly negative attention our community has been receiving, usually centered around the subject of war and terrorism. But don't the veterans of Hollywood swear by the catchphrase: “all publicity is good publicity”?

In contrast, it is clear from our reactions that the Muslim community much prefers the catchphrase: “no news is good news”. Like most ordinary folk, we don't wish to be subjected to the intrusive, and often distortive, camera lens of broadcast media. We just want to be left alone, to live our lives in peaceful obscurity…

Well, my fellow brothers and sisters… it's time to face facts. We've been put on a mission by Allāh – whether we accept it or not – to let the world know about Islam, in whatever way we can. And for this reason alone, we need to start getting media savvy, in order to turn all this free press to our advantage.

Ranting on Ijtema

// November 12th, 2007 // No Comments » // Blog

I've received a semi-complaint by a lovely reader, enquiring when i was going to post something the rest of you guys can read! Well, i did today, but it's over at Ijtema: The Muslim Bashing Must End.

I'm getting pretty fed up with Muslim-on-Muslim bashing. No, i'm not referring to the Shia versus Sunni violence prevalent in Iraq, nor the Sufi versus Salafi rhetoric found on countless forums and blogs spread across the net. Rather, I am referring to this kind of talk:

“Oh, the Muslims are so stupid…”

“Oh, the Muslims are so lazy…”

“Oh, the Muslims are so backward…”

Blah! Blah! Blah!

All from the mouths of everyday Muslims.

Don't you guys get it?

YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT YOURSELVES.

I look forward to your comments, inshā’Allāh. And yes, i was quite annoyed when i wrote the entry – can you tell? {grin}

Please also check out the latest MuslimMatters entry written by bro Amad, about saying Neo to Giuliani!

This is a campaign to bring all Americans together, liberals and conservatives towards a common cause: keeping, what Tom Hayden calls, the most dangerous candidate, out of the White House! If you don't like George Bush's policies, then you should know that Giuliani is far more of a threat to world peace than Bush ever was.

The non-US readers may think, “So what? This doesn't concern me!”, but it really does. America is not called a “super-power” for nothing. The least you can do is keep abreast of US affairs, even if you cannot directly influence them. Please read the entry, and sign up to the campaign if you agree with the sentiment.
