New Theme – Already?

// February 25th, 2009 // 5 Comments » // Blog

Update (26/02/2009): My new theme has been temporarily retracted considering that it is PNG-heavy, and some people are still using Internet Explorer versions 6 and below, which have no-PNG support. I am looking for a quick fix that doesn't involve me designing a special IE<6 site!

It's been approximately two days since I launched the all new site – and already an updated template?

The few readers who knew me back when I started blogging on Blogger over two years ago, will remember how much (and how frequently) I loved to redesign my blog. Moving to denied me that luxury (though it did mean I had more time to spend on useful activities).

Now I have upgraded to a self-hosted blog, the opportunity for my behind to form a near-symbiotic relationship with the computer chair, as I spend countless hours wading through a maze of CSS stylesheets and incomprehensible PHP files, has finally been returned to me. Good thing I finished my PhD already, huh?

In this latest case of design fever, inspiration came from a doodle I drew on my iPod Touch:

Expect more drastic changes, whenever I feel bored and/or inspired!

The Helix Nebula, also known as The helix or NGC 7293, is a large planetary nebula (PN) in the sky and is placed the zodiac constellation of Aquarius. Discovered by Karl Ludwig Harding, probably before 1824, this notably object is one of the closest of all the bright planetary nebulae to the Earth. The estimated distance is about 215 parsec[s] or 700 light-years from us… The Helix has often been referred to as the Eye of God on the Internet, since about 2003. [Source: Wikipedia]

وَلِلَّهِ مُلْكُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

To Allāh belongeth the dominion of the heavens and the earth; and Allāh hath power over all things.

إِنَّ فِي خَلْقِ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَاخْتِلَافِ اللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ لَآيَاتٍ لِأُولِي الْأَلْبَابِ

Behold! in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of night and day,- there are indeed Signs for men of understanding,-

Men who celebrate the praises of Allāh, standing, sitting, and lying down on their sides, and contemplate the (wonders of) creation in the heavens and the earth, (With the thought): “Our Lord! not for naught Hast Thou created (all) this! Glory to Thee! Give us salvation from the penalty of the Fire.”

Snow… in April?!

// April 6th, 2008 // 20 Comments » // Photos

I woke up for the Dawn prayer this morning to find it snowing. I've heard of April showers… but not April snow!

The weather in London has been extremely diverse these past few days: it was the hottest day of the year so far on Friday, dull and overcast with rain yesterday (typical April weather) and today… well, you can see for yourself!

Ad Complaint – Please Lower Your Gaze!

I was travelling on the London Underground, on my way to meet a friend, when I was suddenly faced with something that I really didn't want to see: a very large poster advertising an art exhibit. Admittedly, there is nothing offensive in the idea of informing the public about the latest canvases to hit the gallery – no, I was more disturbed by the decision to use a portrait of a fully naked woman whose, umm… okay, I'm a Biologist, I'll just come out with it – whose genitalia were clearly visible. People, this was not a Picasso, abstract, “Am I looking at this the right way up?” piece of 'art'. It was an extremely life-like, well drawn (unfortunately), coloured portrait of a naked woman! I really didn't know where to look! Well, apart from down, obviously.

While In Rome…

Or in this case, South Kensington.

Gosh, i missed London. Not smelly East London, where i live. Real London… the beautiful architecture, the museums, the universities, the posh folks, the suits, the random tourists… I missed it all! So, after i submitted my thesis (i've written that phrase so many times today, in numerous e-mails and text messages!), i popped into the Victoria & Albert Museum on my way home, to check out their Islamic Middle Eastern art exhibit.

I apologize for the poor photo quality. It was an unplanned visit, so i only had my camera phone, and add to that low lighting = noisy, grainy pics… but maybe it'll inspire you to see the real thing for yourself! Entry to the museum is free, alhamdulillah. Except for my foreign readers, who may have to pay for the airfare to come over to London. {wink}
