A Sad Realization

A few moments ago, I posted the following status message:
Mehzabeen wonders why the Star Trek Voyager crew (or even DS9 – though I’m not really a fan of that spin-off) never got their own ‘motion picture’?
I am not sure why I posted it, because, truly, I don’t expect anyone on my FB or Twitter, or even my Googable blog, to answer it… unless they want to point out how much of a geek I am for thinking about such things, which is so freakin’ clichĂ©, that I’d be forced to throw a virtual chappal at them for not having the imagination to come up with something wittier. I mean, c’mon!
Anyway, it got me thinking about the last time I actually had a friend whom I could share this gloriously abnormal side of me with, as there is no-one in my life right now. For some reason, girls generally aren’t into SciFi, never mind Muslim girls.
To be honest, I think the last time was in secondary school; not even undergrad. Sure, I hung around with student folk who had similar interests, but I wouldn’t class them as “friends”. Just people in my extended social circle. (No, I wasn’t part of the university SciFi soc).
I don’t even have hope for a future husband-type to have a similarly nerdy streak in him; people are just so BLAH. Or, if they’re not boring, they’re already married – most likely to women who don’t appreciate that quirky side. Gah!
Honestly, am I just a one-off here?
Is there anybody else out there?
Hello -oh -oh -oh…? [echo dissipates into the darkness]
Sigh.

I hear ya! I love when you meet another geeky Muslim sister and feel slightly less abnormal though :)
I have to admit, I’ve never taken to Star Trek/Wars/Gate so I don’t know if I count as a bona fide SciFi nerd at all (I find it hard to take actors seriously when they have weird gunky faces and stuff, unless it’s got a comedy side to it). I do love Philip K Dick and Arthur C Clarke stories, so am I allowed in the club?
Wow… you’re a sophisticated SciFi nerd, masha’Allah. :D
Btw, great catch with the Star Trek/Wars/Gate. I never thought to add “Gate”, even though I loved it; both the film and early SG1 spin-off.
As-Salaamu ‘alaikum,
My parents are both into Star Dreck. I always hated it; not the acting or anything, but I found the premise of being on a ship millions of miles from earth really quite depressing. Plus the obvious less-than-believeable aspects, such as all the aliens being humans or at least humans with a couple of odd features that a make-up artist could mock up. Now that I don’t eat at the table with them except on a handful of special occasions, I can leave the room when it’s on (alhamdu lillah).
Why? Because Janeway is a *woman* (duh!)
Even Starfleet has a glass ceiling…
As a kid, I was into SciFi much, but never found Star trek/ Wars interesting one bit! I am not sure why. I used to watch the SciFi channel here all day long.
I guess I’ve grown out of it :)
Does designing dual powered bicycle count?
I will contend that the following is a living testimony of my nerdiness. (I even explained it to an wide-eyed arts student sitting by me.)

Assalamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullah
I’m amazed by the response to this moan-fest, hehe. :)
Star DRECK? Ouch… :(
