As far as I know, they chose to travel through predominantly Muslim countries as they knew they would get better coverage from Arab media, which would help them in fundraising, and increasing public pressure on the Egyptian government to eventually let the convoy into Gaza.

Why did they pick this particular route for the VP convoy? It is a very long and indirect route, and the harassment they received going through Tunisia was highly predictable as that state has a history of hostility to anything Islamic. Was it to avoid going through non-Muslim and non-EU countries in the Balkans, or longer ferry crossings than the one between Spain and Morocco? I hope the reasons were logistical, as to spend money on fuelling so many vehicles across so many countries would have been a waste, even if it was meant as a display of “brotherhood”.
