The first episode of a new three-part documentary on Science and Islam comes out next Monday, 5th January 2009, on BBC4, at 9pm (if you miss it, catch it on BBC iPlayer):

Physicist Jim Al-Khalili travels through Syria, Iran, Tunisia and Spain to tell the story of the great leap in scientific knowledge that took place in the Islamic world between the 8th and 14th centuries.

An Evening in East London

SimSim and I went on a little ‘adventure’ last night in our efforts to find an ice rink in East London.

First, we went on the bus towards Stratford – the future home of the 2012 Olympics, insha’Allah. On the way, we got stuck in traffic on Green Street, one of the main districts for S.E. Asian shopping in London. However, it is also the home of West Ham United football ground; so Saturday nights tend to bring out the footie fans.

Regent Street: Day vs Night

Some photos that I took during my travels to Central London today.

As a side, if someone had mugged me on my way home (yes, I have strange thoughts like that) they would have done very well. In my coat pockets I had the following:

• two mobile phones
• an iPod Touch
• £250 in cash
• a Canon digicam, that cost around £150 at the time of purchase

I was also carrying a laptop bag containing the MacBook that set me back £900 earlier this year, and my purse – but that only contained £15.

Anyway… Alhamdulillah, I was not mugged, and I am now in the relative safety of my own living room. Still, I can’t help wondering how silly I was for carrying all that stuff around. It couldn’t really be helped though…
