Boycott Israeli Dates

// September 10th, 2008 // Blog

I was shocked to learn that Israel is a major producer and exporter of dates to the European market!

They are grown in the Jordan Valley, West Bank, and are the most profitable crop of the illegal Israeli settlers, who exploit the desperate poverty of their Palestinian workers – including children – with appalling working conditions. One company, Carmel Agrexco, even boasted about producing an early crop in time for Ramadan!

Imagine: to be proud that Muslims are breaking their fast with such blood-soaked dates. A product of illegal, oppressive apartheid!

How very, very, very sad… and sick.

Information from the Inminds Campaign Website:

What else can we do?

– Post this information onto your websites, blogs and forward onto your contacts.
– If you spot these brands in your local shops, complain to the owner (download sample letter of complaint, produced by Inminds) – ESPECIALLY IF THE SHOP IS MUSLIM-OWNED!
– If you spot these brands in someone's house, POLITELY point out their origin. Most Muslims don't know about this (I didn't), and would not have bought these dates if they had known. So please be polite.
– Remember our Palestinian brothers and sisters in your dua, when placing a date in your mouth this Ramadan.

Hat-tip to bro Tariq for making me aware of this.

P.S., I know this may seem like just another average Muslim-lead boycott – and oh how we Muslims do love our boycotts – but in this case, it is clear that this is the most direct means of action we can take. It targets the offending companies that are mistreating their workers, as well as the illegal Israeli settlers. Plus, do you really want to be buying dates that were grown on stolen land? Stolen at gun point. It's just not right, is it?

What clever name choices. You’d think you’re buying Arab produce.

They planned it so when they devised the wall. There are lots of examples of date and lime trees being one side and the Palestinian farmer the other. Not enough to take the land, also taking their livelihoods. I already boycott Israeli produce luckily there isn’t much they export to us, oranges mainly.

    Islam blog: indeed.

Lucy: Muslims are big consumers of dates during Ramadan, as it was a Prophetic tradition to break the fast at sunset with this fruit. That is the disgusting irony of this revelation: Muslims against Palestinian oppression maybe opening their sacred fasts with the literal fruits of the Israeli occupation!

    As-Salaamu ‘alaikum,

The fact that most of the dates in the supermarkets are Israeli (and there is no distinction between actual Israeli and settlement produce) is not new; they have been so for years. This applies certainly in Waitrose and Sainsbury’s, the two supermarkets I use most. To get other dates, you need to go to Muslim-run shops (and even some of those stock the Israeli ones).

I realise that it is not a new thing, but I was certainly unaware of this, and so are many of my friends and family. Many Muslims know about the general Israeli boycott (though not that many adhere to it), but are not aware about the specific issue with the dates.

Alhamdulillah, for the past few years, my uncle has been buying dates for our household during his annual Umrah/Hajj trips. I was really into dates at one point (like, as a daily snack, not just during Ramadan!) so he is in the habit of bringing a few kilos back for me! Though my sweet tooth has since moved on.

Someone gave me a leaflet regarding this, this morning.
Its good to know, considering where the money would be going…

My family tends to have dates sent over fresh from Algeria/egypt, far from easy but at least you know the source.

Fresh dates from Egypt sound yum!

It’s so sad. We have some relatives in West Bank and i really know how much they live in difficulty.
It’s funny that muslim world has almost the most rich regions due to oil and gas in the mid east, yet the most poor people too. :(

  9. You know I really think stuff like this is always…”OMG ITS THE JEWS, ATTTACK!!!!”

but then when you said, its the best we can do, I guess it true.

That land does belong to palestinians and as Muslim is it fard on us to Jihad there, and if this be jihad then this is our jihad to boycott Israelli buisness.
