Spiders are Pyschic!

// March 25th, 2008 // 9 Comments » // Blog

The other night, I was lying in bed, waiting to drift asleep, when a random thought suddenly popped into my head:

Alhamdulillah, I haven't seen any spiders in my room for a long time now…”

Which was quickly followed by:

“Oh cr*p! What the heck did I think that for?!”.

You see, spiders are psychic – or, at least they are with me. Maybe I'm the Doctor Dolittle of the spider world. A mere passing thought is enough to subconsciously set off some kind of biological homing beacon – perhaps a special arachnid pheromone – which alerts the little [bleep]s to my location!

Don't believe me? Well, just ten minutes ago, I was sat at my computer, surfing away, when I felt a funny feeling on the underside of my left arm. I often get funny feelings there, usually pins and needles caused by leaning against the arm of my chair too long… but this time it was different… it was moving…

That's a direct quote, ten milliseconds following the moment I looked down at my arm.

I am still reeling from it; I keep getting creepy sensations over random parts of my body, which I must respond to with a sudden outburst of hand swishing.

And to top it all off, it's still in my room… somewhere… waiting… {wibble}

I started writing this in response to a question that I was asked on another thread. I thought it might be useful to other peeps looking to do a PhD, so I'm posting it as an entry (plus it was breaking the record for “longest comment ever”).

Q. As someone who is inshā’Allāh going to start PhD studies soon in chemistry, can you offer a few words of advice on what I should expect? Also, can you offer some advice on how to maintain and enrich an islamic identity through the process?

A. Jazakallah Qas, for your questions; I am honoured that you asked me for advice. I pray that I can be of service.

What to expect? Well, forgive me for my brutal honesty, but I think you deserve to know the truth…

Ad Complaint – Please Lower Your Gaze!

I was travelling on the London Underground, on my way to meet a friend, when I was suddenly faced with something that I really didn't want to see: a very large poster advertising an art exhibit. Admittedly, there is nothing offensive in the idea of informing the public about the latest canvases to hit the gallery – no, I was more disturbed by the decision to use a portrait of a fully naked woman whose, umm… okay, I'm a Biologist, I'll just come out with it – whose genitalia were clearly visible. People, this was not a Picasso, abstract, “Am I looking at this the right way up?” piece of 'art'. It was an extremely life-like, well drawn (unfortunately), coloured portrait of a naked woman! I really didn't know where to look! Well, apart from down, obviously.

The Doctor’s in the Hizaus!

For those who have not yet been informed by phone, e-mail or Facebook status message… I passed my PhD viva today, alhamdulillah! :D

This is how I feel:

(that, and extremely tired in a craving-the-sofa-with-some-good-chocolate-and-no-brain-TV-to-numb-my-mind, kinda way!)

Finger Power

// March 2nd, 2008 // 4 Comments » // Blog

This is the first (and possibly the last) entry written from my spangly new iPod Touch! It's a little fiddly to type on – mainly cos of my fat fingers pressing the wrong keys (not as bad as Homer Simpson though!). Also not all the page elements load properly, e.g., I can't scroll through my list of categories (so good thing “Apple” & “Blogging” were visible).

Btw, I only bought this one cos the old iPod died. It has now been recycled so I don't feel so bad about contributing to the techno gadget waste pile.

Okay… I've had enough of this. The End.
